The Journey Begins

Mier y Teran Report

The unrest and turmoil of the Fredonian Rebellion worried Mexican leaders. They were concerned that other Anglos living in Texas might want to rebel. They sent a wise man named General Mier y Teran on an important mission to see if the people in Texas were loyal. Mier y Teran packed his bags and set off on his journey.

When Mier y Teran arrived in Texas, he started to explore. He talked to many people and listened carefully. He noticed that the Anglos were not following Mexican laws. They kept their own culture and beliefs. They spoke English, were not practicing Catholicism, and even kept slaves, which was against Mexican law. This made Mier y Teran concerned.

Mier y Teran decided to write a report about his findings. He wrote, "The Anglos are not loyal to Mexico. They do not follow our laws, and they care more about their own ways of life than the rules of the Mexican government." But the general didn't just write about the problems. He also came up with some ideas to fix them.

First, he suggested closing the border to stop more Americans from coming. He recommended that Mexico instead send more people from Europe and Mexico to live in Texas to strengthen the bond between Texas and Mexico. Second, he recommended increasing trade between Mexico and Texas. Third, he thought Mexico needed more soldiers in Texas, so he suggested strengthening the presidios with more soldiers. These ideas were meant to keep peace and harmony. Mier y Teran hoped his recommendations would help both lands... but the tension between Mexico and the settlers in Texas would continue to grow.
